Sewing Machine
I have had the same sewing machine since I was in high school. This particular Singer was my mother's and before that my grandmother's. It has seen me through many sewing projects, but last fall it failed me.
I've been making baby clothes since my older daughter, Audra, was born in June 2008. I made her cute, comfortable, clothes from all-natural and/or organic fibers. She developed quite a collection of unique hand-crafted burp cloths. Making clothes and burp cloths for her is actually what inspired me to start making and selling my wares.
About this time last year (while I was VERY pregnant with my second little one) my trusty sewing machine began to show signs that she was giving up. Stitches would slip. Bobbins wouldn't thread. Eventually she reached the point where the needs just went up and down but nothing happened. It was a sad, sad day.
A part of me was sad to be losing this friend. The hormonal, pregnant part of me was devastated that I couldn't make cute things for my new baby who would be joining us in September.
Eleanor came in September and the only handmade things she had were the hand-me-downs from her sister. Thankfully, she doesn't seem to mind (yet). As the weather turned cold my attention turned to making greensleeves (which are easier to work on when holding a baby all the time anyway).
I kept my eyes open for a new sewing machine. With two babies there wasn't much extra money for a sewing machine. In March I finally found one on craigslist. It is a Nelco. This beautiful sewing machine is in a sewing table and has about 20 cams for different stitches. It is so crafty and nerdy.
I was so excited to start using it (as I was told that it was functioning), but ran into a few problems. I think it's a tension issue. The needle seems to be slicing through the thread from the bobbin on the back stitch. I'm not sure exactly what's going on with it, but I will figure it out. I'll tinker and adjust things until it hums along and sews beautiful little stitches. I will conquer.
